Lauren Groff’s Short Stories Book Cover Designs

Cover Designs + Title

My main concept is laundry and washing machines, the epitome of ‘organised chaos'. I connected the quote the quote 'rung of children' whilst reading one of the short stories, using this as a basepoint for my design. The washing machine represents the characters. It ties in with the natural disasters the characters face in the book, alludes to death in the Noah's Ark story, and the cyclical motion of life. I also think washing machines are metaphors for how the characters mourn: feeling chaos inside, but seeming controlled and functional on the outside.

I titled the book ‘Scope’, subtely combining the words ‘scope’ and ‘cope’. Scope is defined as the expanse of space (linking to the geographical theme of Florida and the natural disasters). It can also be read as S-COPE, which represents how the characters cope with terrible tragedies.

Inside Pages

This involved the consideration of how I could transform the words to be more immersive for the reader. There are many subtle layers of meaning embedded within my design choices, that link the inside pages to the concept of the cover. After various iterations, these include full image spreads of t shirts, a denser texture of words and the choice of the fonts Palatino and Gil Sans. Palatino’s small X height provided the perfect amounts of flow and disruption, whereas Gil Sans combined a sharp and round edge, perfect for headings.

In terms of structure, I organised the story into sections named after laundry terms e.g ‘Wash Max 60, Iron Cool Max, Hand Wash’, metaphorically alluding to future events. This was paired with photographs of T shirts progressively getting cleaner.

During this book focused project, it challenged and provoked many questions for me as a designer. Increasing my knowledge of typography, being more selective and experimenting with how I could embed symbolism within aesthetic.
